Department of Electrical Engineering

The Department of Electrical Engineering, one of the first Departments established at the Technological Education Institute of Crete, aims at educating and training new engineers in a constant changing field, the field of electric power.

The study programme of the Department has been designed in such a way that it provides its graduates with the necessary knowledge to study, design and build, plus to run and maintain electrical systems. The relevant application field is particularly wide and includes electric power systems, electrical facilities, automations and measurements, electrical/electronic circuits and constructions, environmental technologies, materials, mechatronics, optoelectronics and microelectronics. The study programme is regularly improved to keep up with the needs of the market and the technological advances.

The studies combine theoretical training, which provides students with the necessary scientific knowledge, with laboratory training, which helps them develop the required skills and competences. In order to ensure that students are fully prepared for the professional arena, the studies also include a practicum and an undergraduate thesis, which is a means of encouraging self-motivation and initiative-taking in order to analyse and solve a technological problem.

After completing the basic courses, the graduates of the Department are ranked at level 6 of the national qualifications framework, in other words at the same level with the universities; furthermore, under the Presidential Decree No 108/2013 its graduates have expanded professional rights.

The graduates of the Department can, also, continue with postgraduate studies not only in other Educational Institutes of Greece or abroad, but also within the mere TEI of Crete, as the Department coordinates two interdepartmental Master Programmes titled “Advanced Systems of Production, Automation and Robotics” and “Energy Systems”.

The Department has built collaborative relationships with bodies, companies and institutions in Greece and abroad, under which our students are able to familiarize themselves with modern technology issues. Moreover, it has a really active role in conducting research in several fields, such as those of energy systems (Centre of Energy and Photovoltaic Systems, “TALOS” High Voltage Test Station of the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator – HEDNO), nanomaterial (Centre of Materials Technology and Photonics), mechatronics (Laboratory of Robotics, Automation and Intelligent Systems) and informatics (Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Mechanical Systems). In fact, it participates in one of the top research projects of the European Union about the new generation photovoltaic panels using graphene.
